Gamers who are excited about Starfield have every right to be. As we all know, it is being developed by Bethesda Game Studios, who brought us Fallout 3, Fallout 4, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. All those games are adored by millions of gamers, and they did well across all scoring metrics. I personally don't like them and the only game I have beaten among those four is Skyrim. Skyrim's writing and the open-world are excellent, but its combat and the graphics are not my cup of tea. Gameplay and graphics/art direction are my bread and butter when it comes to enjoying games. I also enjoy exploration and everything an open-world game has to offer, but if the combat and graphics are bad or just average, I tend to not like the game as much. However, I feel like I'm going to enjoy Starfield.
Based on the most recent gameplay trailer, Starfield's combat looks enjoyable. It sucks that the game will be locked at 30 frames per second, but the shooting mechanics look pretty solid. There were reports that ID Software, the developers of Doom and Doom Eternal, were helping out Bethesda Game Studios with the combat, but they were just assisting with motion blur and the visual side of moment-to-moment gameplay per Game Rant's report. Still, any help from ID Software means that BGS is taking Starfield's gameplay very seriously and that has me excited.
As long as the gameplay is good to great and as long as the open world is as ambitious if not more than Skyrim's, then I will definitely play Starfield for a long time. I'm very excited to explore all the planets in Starfield in 4K fidelity mode. I spent over two thousand dollars on my Samsung QLED so then I could enjoy all the beautiful worlds that these next-gen games have to offer. Playing Elden Ring, The Witcher 3 with its next-gen update, Red Dead Redemption 2, Forza Horizon 5, and A Plague Tale Requiem on my Xbox Series X is just magical. I really appreciate games that offer us incredible and beautiful worlds to explore, and I can't wait for all the adventures that we will witness in Starfield's universe.
Now is there a chance that Starfield could flop and be a disappointment? Is it possible for a game developed by Todd Howard and Bethesda Game Studios to be a failure among players and critics? We all thought Redfall by Arkane Studios was going to be amazing but it turned out to be a disaster as it failed at all levels. Yes, none of Arkane Studios' games have ever been as big or industry-shaking games as BGS games, and they never were that popular among gamers. However, Arkane games such as Prey, Dishonored, Dishonored 2, and Deathloop were always considered to be very good to great by the critics, and gamers who played those games, they adored them. Yet, Redfall came and it flopped instantly. I myself haven't played it yet as I'm waiting for the 60 FPS performance mode for it.
So far, we haven't heard any negative report about the development process of Starfield but remember, we didn't hear anything negative about Redfall's development before its launch either. Reports came out after Redfall's release that some of the developers who were working on it, wanted Bethesda or Microsoft to intervene and cancel the development of the game as they were not satisfied with it being single-player only. Those reports also stated that many of the developers who were with Arkane Studios during the development of Prey and Dishonored games, left before or during the development of Redfall. So yeah, after reading those reports, it was clear that Redfall was doomed to fail from the start.
It is obvious to everyone in the gaming community that Todd Howard and his team have no desire to get the production of Starfield cancelled as they have spent over twenty-five years researching and pitching this game to the publishers. I honestly don't have any concerns about this game, but I just don't like how the characters look. Their face models look like something we used to have during the Xbox 360 and PS3 era. The graphics overall look really good, as all the planets they have shown so far look absolutely gorgeous, and all the massive creatures living in some of those planets, also look incredible.
Starfield is one of the most anticipated games of the year and of this entire Xbox Series X/S and PS5 generation. Games that are constantly talked about prior to their release tend to get high scores from the critics, and they also do well in terms of sales. The last major game with crazy anticipation to somewhat fail at launch was Cyberpunk 2077, but that was because it launched full of bugs and just wasn't as good graphically as it was advertised. Cyberpunk 2077 does have a solid metascore of 86 and it ended up being a major success among gamers within a year or two. Overall, the hottest and the biggest games of the year rarely disappoint. In 2020, there was a lot of hype around The Last of Us 2, and it ended up being one of the most awarded games of all time. In 2021, Halo Infinite launched with great scores and a huge player base, however, gamers started to dislike it six to seven months after its release due to lack of content. In 2022, Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarök were two of the most highly anticipated games and they both dominated all the other games during the year in sales and awards, and they both received ninety-plus metascores. So far this year, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Final Fantasy XVI, and Baldur's Gate 3 all matched the hype, and in some cases, exceeded the expectations they had prior to their releases.
Now Starfield and Spider-Man 2 are releasing in the next two months. Spider-Man 2 is going to do crazy numbers as it is a Spider-Man game (duh) and it is a sequel to 2018's Spider-Man by Insomniac Games, which was loved by everyone who played it, including me. The chances of Spider-Man 2 being disappointing are very low. Starfield, on the other hand, is a brand-new IP by one of the most dedicated gaming studios in the business. It isn't easy for new IPs to be successful, but if they are being developed by one of the best studios in the world, they find a way to get it done. Elden Ring and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (my favorite game ever) by FromSoftware, The Last of Us by Naughty Dog, Cyberpunk 2077 by CD Projekt Red, and Horizon Zero Dawn by Guerrilla Games were all brand-new IPs from world-class developers, and they are all amazing! Gamers are expecting same level of greatness from Starfield and Bethesda Game Studios. Will they deliver?
