Today is June 21st, 2023 and I won't be starting a new game until most likely September. We have Starfield, Lies of P, and Cyberpunk 2077's expansion (Phantom Liberty) coming out in September. I know Final Fantasy XVI is releasing tomorrow but it is not for me. I have tried two other Final Fantasy games (VII Remake and VX) and they both were amazing but again, not for me. For my current gaming rotation, I have been playing Mass Effect 2, Street Fighter 6, and just went back to Halo Infinite last night to play its brand-new season. Halo is fun and I don't care what anyone says.
Mass Effect 2 is basically a brand new game for me as I never played it before. So far, I'm enjoying my time with it and I'm looking forward to playing Mass Effect 3. You guys might be wondering why in the year 2023 I'm not playing any story-driven or action-adventure games released in 2023. Well first, this year has already been one heck of a year for gaming, and I have already beaten games such as Hi-Fi Rush, Scars Above, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. All five of them released in 2023 and I enjoyed all of them. Resident Evil 4 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor are my favorites of the year so far. Secondly, while there are some other amazing games out there, they are just not my type of games. Diablo 4, Hogwarts Legacy (I did try this one), The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Final Fantasy XVI are all considered special by the majority of gamers, but none of those are for me.
So what games I'm looking forward to playing in the second half of 2023? There are about nine of them, but it could be ten depending on how well I do with Lies of P. Due to workload and lack of time, I haven't been getting enough time to play video games, and I really need a good decent time to be able to play souls-like games. I'm not as good as other souls-players when it comes to games like Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, and so on, but I have completed the main campaign of four souls-like games. I'm still struggling with Bloodborne and I started playing it two years ago. So if I end up having a good time with Lies of P, then I will definitely play the other souls-like game releasing later this year, and that is Lords of the Fallen. Will I be getting it day one? No, and that's because it is releasing less than a month after Lies of P and just a week before my most anticipated game for the second half of 2023, Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
It is crazy how there are so many massive games in September and October that I wanna play, but Spider-Man 2 will be my most played game this fall for sure. I really enjoyed Spider-Man 2018 by Insomniac Games as it had an excellent story, really good combat, solid characters, and a beautiful-looking New York City. I have played a couple other games by Insomniac, Sunset Overdrive and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and both of them were very enjoyable. Their track record is phenomenal and I have no doubt Spider-Man 2 will be epic. Really looking forward to the boss fight with Venom.
There are about five games this year that I won't be playing day one, but I'm looking forward to getting all of them during Black Friday Weekend. Yes, I have already started planning my Black Friday purchases. Those five games are Immortals of Aveum, Atlas Fallen, Mortal Kombat 1 Remake, Alan Wake 2, and Lords of the Fallen (depending on how my time goes with Lies of P). There are several reasons for not picking up these games day one and one of them is because I have already spent a lot of money on gaming this year. I have easily spent over $1000 on games, DLCs, Spider-Man 2 Collector's Edition, and controllers and accessories. I kinda need to go easy with spending money on games. Another reason why I won't be picking up these games day one is because I'm not sure if I'm going to like them. Yes, they are definitely my kind of games, but there have been times when I didn't enjoy games that I thought I was going to love. For example, Atlas Fallen is being published by Focus Entertainment, the same publisher who brought us games like A Plague Tale: Requiem and Evil West. I enjoyed both of them, but this same publisher also helped in releasing GreedFall. It really looked like a game for me but I didn't like it at all. The third reason for not picking up these games day one or at full price is because there is not enough time to play them along with the games that I really, really wanna play.
Games that I will be definitely playing day one in the second half of 2023 are Starfield, Spider-Man 2, Lies of P, Forza Motorsport, and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. Three of those games are going to be on GamePass, so I won't have to spend an additional dollar to play them. I have already pre-ordered Spider-Man 2, so now I just need to buy the Cyberpunk expansion. I sure hope there is a physical release for the expansion as Cyberpunk 2077 is one of my favorite games of all time and I like to collect physical copies of my favorite games.
Based on the track record of these developers, Bethesda Game Studios (Starfield), Insomniac Games (Spider-Man 2), Turn 10 Studios (Forza Motorsport), and CD Projekt Red (Cyberpunk), we know their games are going to be either really good or they are going to be masterpieces that we will be talking about for the next five to ten years. Round 8 Studio and Neowiz Games, the developers of Lies of P, don't have the cache like other big studios do, but they are basically just getting started. I tried the demo of Lies of P and I think it has the potential to be something special. Lies of P is my second most anticipated game this fall. Souls games can be very difficult and annoying sometimes, but every time you win a boss fight in these games, the feeling is so rewarding!
I mentioned above that Bethesda Game Studios have an incredible track record with all the games they have delivered in the past. To be honest, I am not a fan of their games as they never clicked with me. However, Starfield just looks and feels different than all the BGS games I have played before. Of all the trailers we have seen so far, Starfield looks so beautiful and breathtaking, and plus the combat with the gunplay looks really fun and satisfying. I might not like Starfield as much as I think I would, but thanks to Xbox Game Pass, I will definitely be playing it day one. If it wasn't for GamePass, I might have waited for a sale to play this game.
So, there you have it! Fall 2023 is packed with some fantastic games and I will be playing nine to ten of those. I might actually end up playing thirteen games this fall. It will be thirteen games if we end up getting Ereban: Shadow Legacy, Replaced, and Stalker 2 by the end of the year. If you somehow haven't seen the trailers for these three games, please check them out. They are really good.
What games are you looking forward to playing this fall?
